Public Enemy is an American hip-hop group from Long Island, New York. Consisting of Chuck D, Flavor Flav, DJ Lord, the band S1W, Khari Wynn and Professor Griff, and formed in 1982, Public Enemy are a group known for their politically controversial lyrics and criticism of the American media, accompanied by a strong interest for the frustrations and problems encountered in the African-American community. Their first four albums, released in the 1980s and 1990s, went gold or platinum and were, according to music critic Robert Hilburn, « the most acclaimed works ever by a rap group ».
